Odoo Community is the free, open-source version of Odoo available to download and self-host at no licence cost. Odoo Enterprise is the paid version starting from approximately £15 per user per month, hosted on Odoo.sh or self-hosted with a paid licence. Enterprise includes features Community lacks: the UK accounting localisation with Making Tax Digital compliance, the mobile app, Odoo Studio (no-code customisation), certain advanced modules (Sign, Approval, IoT Box) and official Odoo support. For UK businesses with accounting needs, Enterprise is almost always required because Community's accounting module lacks the HMRC MTD integration.

Odoo Community is the foundation of the Odoo platform. It includes over 40 core modules covering CRM, Sales, Inventory, Manufacturing, Purchase, Project, Accounting (basic), Helpdesk, E-commerce, Point of Sale, Recruitment, Leaves and more. The source code is on GitHub and any developer can download, modify and deploy it.
For UK businesses, the MTD VAT filing gap in Community is typically the deciding factor. Filing VAT returns manually or through bridging software from Odoo Community works but adds friction. Enterprise eliminates this entirely.
Odoo Enterprise pricing in 2026 follows a per-user model with different tiers depending on hosting:
| Hosting option | Price per user per month | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Odoo Online (Odoo.sh managed) | ~£15-20/user | All updates managed by Odoo, no server cost |
| Odoo.sh (developer platform) | ~£20-25/user | Full server control, staging environments |
| On-premise Enterprise | ~£15/user (licence only) | Add your own hosting cost (~£30-100/month VPS) |
Odoo introduced a significant pricing change in 2023: the "One App Free" model. You can use ONE Odoo app for free in the cloud for unlimited users. This is typically used to get started with one module (e.g., CRM only). As soon as you add a second app, you move to the full Enterprise per-user pricing.
A 10-person UK manufacturer using Accounting, Inventory, Manufacturing, Sales and Purchase on Odoo Enterprise Online at £20 per user pays £200 per month. Compare this to QuickBooks Plus at £25/month plus separate inventory software at £50/month plus CRM at £50/month = £125/month for three separate tools that do not share data. Odoo consolidates at slightly higher cost but with far better data integration.
This is the most important UK-specific reason to choose Enterprise. MTD for VAT has been mandatory since April 2022. MTD for Income Tax starts April 2026 for incomes over £50,000. Odoo Enterprise's accounting module submits VAT returns directly to HMRC via the official API. This means your accountant or bookkeeper can prepare and submit VAT returns entirely within Odoo without exporting to a bridging tool.
With Odoo Community, you must export your VAT figures and submit through HMRC's Making Tax Digital Portal or a bridging tool like VitalTax or Xero (acting as a bridge). This is workable but adds 20-30 minutes per VAT period and creates a reconciliation risk.
Odoo Enterprise has a UK payroll module that handles RTI submissions to HMRC, auto-enrolment pension contributions (NEST, Smart Pension, People's Pension), P60/P11D generation and payslips. Community has a basic payroll module that does not include UK-specific HMRC submission capabilities.
Odoo Studio (Enterprise-only) lets you create custom forms, add fields to any module and modify views without coding. For UK businesses needing custom fields for CQC compliance, HMRC reference numbers, Companies House registration details or FCA authorisation numbers, Studio removes the need for custom development.
Odoo Community makes sense in specific UK contexts:
UK software companies, tech startups and businesses with in-house developers often choose Odoo Community to avoid licence fees and maintain full control over the codebase. They handle VAT filing via a separate tool or a custom MTD module built internally. This approach requires a developer who knows Odoo's architecture - not a one-time setup but ongoing maintenance.
A UK business using Odoo solely for CRM, inventory or manufacturing - with accounting handled elsewhere (QuickBooks, Xero, Sage) - can use Community without the MTD limitation being a problem. The accounting integration runs via API to the other tool.
A UK business evaluating Odoo can deploy Community on a VPS for £10-20 per month to test workflows and user adoption before committing to Enterprise licensing. This is a legitimate and common evaluation path.
Odoo Community is genuinely free and can be deployed by UK charities, schools and housing associations who cannot afford Enterprise licensing. Note that Odoo offers discounted Enterprise pricing for registered charities in some cases - worth asking your Odoo partner.
Odoo Community appears to be free but has real costs that are less visible than Enterprise's monthly fee:
For a 10-person UK business, the true annual cost of Odoo Community is often £3,000-£6,000 when server, developer maintenance and support costs are included. Odoo Enterprise at £20/user/month is £2,400 per year for the same team - potentially cheaper with less operational risk.
UK businesses often start on Odoo Community and later migrate to Enterprise as their needs grow. The migration process is straightforward in theory but requires careful planning:
A typical Community-to-Enterprise migration for a UK business with 2 years of data takes 3-5 days of partner time. Softomate Solutions includes migration planning in all Odoo Enterprise implementation projects.
The Odoo Community software is free to download and use. You pay for hosting (server costs) and any developer or partner support. There are no Odoo licence fees for Community. The catch is that several key features - including the UK MTD accounting integration, the mobile app and Odoo Studio - require Enterprise. For UK businesses with straightforward compliance requirements, Community's free status comes with meaningful feature gaps.
Not natively. The official HMRC MTD API integration is an Enterprise feature. Odoo Community users can calculate their 9-box VAT return within Odoo but must export the figures and submit through HMRC's online portal or MTD bridging software. This is a manual step but is workable for businesses filing quarterly VAT returns with low transaction volumes.
Odoo Community has no user limit. You can have 1 or 1,000 users on a Community deployment at no additional licence cost. The only constraint is server capacity - more users require more RAM and CPU on your hosting. Odoo recommends at least 2GB RAM per 10 concurrent users for a comfortable Community deployment.
Yes. Odoo offers a 15-day free trial of Enterprise via the Odoo website. The trial includes the full Enterprise feature set on Odoo Online infrastructure. No credit card is required. After 15 days you choose a plan or the account is deactivated. This is a good way to evaluate whether Enterprise's UK features justify the cost before committing.
For small UK businesses (under 20 users), Odoo Online via Odoo.sh is the simplest option - Odoo manages all infrastructure, updates and backups. For businesses needing more control (custom server configuration, staging environments, specific data residency requirements), Odoo.sh Developer Platform or a self-hosted VPS in a UK data centre (e.g., Fasthosts, 34SP) is recommended. UK GDPR requirements are satisfied by both options with appropriate Data Processing Agreements.
Yes. Community modules can be installed on Enterprise. However, they must be tested for compatibility with the specific Odoo version and the Enterprise codebase. Some Community modules from the Odoo App Store work with Enterprise; others conflict with Enterprise-specific modules. An Odoo partner reviews compatibility as part of implementation planning.
Odoo's official partner network (Ready, Silver, Gold partners) can offer discounted Enterprise pricing for customers they onboard. Working with a UK Odoo partner like Softomate Solutions often provides better initial pricing than buying Enterprise direct from Odoo, plus you get implementation support included. Ask your prospective partner about their partner pricing before purchasing direct.
Odoo Community has no official support from Odoo SA. Support options for UK Community users include: the Odoo community forums (forum.odoo.com), GitHub issues for bug reports, UK Odoo user groups and third-party Odoo partners who offer Community support contracts. A typical UK Community support contract from an Odoo partner costs £500-£1,500 per year for a small business, covering bug investigation and configuration advice.
For most UK businesses with accounting needs, Odoo Enterprise is the correct choice. The MTD VAT compliance alone justifies the licence fee for any VAT-registered business. Community makes sense for technical teams who will manage their own deployment and handle VAT separately, or for proof-of-concept evaluation. The hidden costs of Community maintenance often match or exceed Enterprise pricing within 12 months.
